The Physicians Foundation awarded a grant to the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2014 to launch an innovative physician leadership program focused on physician mindfulness. Douglas Ziedonis, MD, MPH, Professor and Chairman in the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School & UMass Memorial Health Care, Director and developer of the Mindful Physician Leadership Program (MPLP), discusses the program and how it’s helping physicians utilize mindfulness approaches in their lives, practices, and leadership roles.

The Physicians Foundation awarded a grant in 2012 to the South Dakota State Medical Association (SDSMA) Foundation to launch the South Dakota Center for Physician Resources. Mark East, Vice President of the South Dakota Medical Association, discusses the center’s impact on local physicians.

The Physicians Foundation has awarded a number of grants to the Vermont Medical Society Education and Research Foundation to support physician leadership programs across the state of Vermont. Cyrus Jordan, MD, Medical Director of the Vermont Medical Society Education and Research Foundation, discusses the leadership initiatives and how they are helping practicing physicians improve healthcare in the state.

As part of the Foundation’s Physician Leadership blog series, we recently sat down with Docia Hickey, MD, President of the North Carolina Medical Society. Dr. Hickey, a neonatologist with more than 30 years of experience working across an array of practice settings, shares her thoughts on the current state of medicine, advice for young physicians and the competencies and qualities needed to become a physician leader today.

The Foundation’s goal is to begin a dialogue with practicing physicians, state medical societies and other key stakeholders on the role of physician leadership, its various components and how best the medical community can work together to maximize our success.
