Founded to Advance the Work and Development of Physicians
The Physicians Foundation was founded in 2003 to support healthcare improvements in the delivery of patient care, provide physicians with a support system, promote physician leadership and education, and further improve physician practices.
In 2003, a class-action lawsuit brought about by physicians, 19 state medical societies and three county medical societies against private third-party payers resulted in a significant monetary settlement. This settlement led to the founding of two sister organizations – the Physicians Foundation for Health Systems Excellence and the Physicians Foundation for Health Systems Innovations. The two organizations later merged to form one body that has become a leading voice for physicians across America – offering resources, education and support in the face of a rapidly changing healthcare system.
Working to Promote a Better Future for Physicians and Their Patients
By 2005, the Foundation completed its first round of grants to nonprofit organizations across the United States, totaling $16 million. Today, The Physicians Foundation has awarded numerous grants totaling more than $40 million to organizations such as universities, hospital systems and medical society foundations. As grant recipients, these organizations have made great strides in the development of tools and resources supporting physician leadership training, raising the bar for health information technology, tackling critical issues like physician shortage and helping physicians deliver the optimal care to help their patients.
Today, the Physicians Foundation works closely with a range of organizations and grantees – including many state medical society foundations across the U.S. – to support the work of practicing physicians and particularly those in solo and small practices. Through its research and policy studies, the Foundation has emerged as a powerful voice for physicians navigating healthcare reform. As the healthcare system in America continues to evolve, the Physicians Foundation is committed to identifying how healthcare reform can best be adapted to help physicians and their patients.
