Louis J. GoodmanPhD, CAE

Louis J. Goodman is Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the Texas Medical Association (TMA). Organized in 1853, TMA is a professional membership organization of more than 50,000 physician and medical student members. TMA is the largest state medical society and was named “American’s Best Medical Society” by Medical Economics magazine.

TMA is a member driven professional association that works in close collaboration with Texas’ 110 county medical societies.  Since his appointment as CEO, TMA membership has increased 42% and financial reserves have increased 154%.  The association is nationally recognized for passage of state tort reform legislation, including a constitutional amendment resulting in expanded patient access to physician services throughout the state.

Most recently, Dr. Goodman was appointed CEO of TMA PracticeEdge, LLC, an innovative organization that creates physician-owned accountable care organizations (ACOs), currently with 14 ACOs with 700 physician members, caring for over 170,000 patients.

Dr. Goodman holds the appointment of Adjunct Professor of Public Health at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, is an honorary member of the American Medical Association, treasurer of the Physician Advocacy Institute and past president of The Physicians Foundation, the American Association of Medical Society Executives and the Texas Society of Association Executives.  He serves on the executive committee of the Texas Civil Justice League, the TMA Insurance Trust Board of Trustees, and is chairman of The Coalition of State Medical Societies.  He is the 2008 recipient of the TSAE “Distinguished Executive Award” and the 2009 recipient of the AMA’s “Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Dr. Goodman is a 30-year veteran of the TMA staff.  This year marks his 21st year as CEO.  Dr. Goodman has a master’s and a doctoral degree in public policy and medical economics from New York University. He has published more than 100 articles on health care and leadership.  He and his wife, Joann, have been married for 46 years and have two daughters.
